About this journal

California
Romantica

A journal dedicated to the Spanish Colonial Revival homes, sun-warmed gardens, and timeless spirit of California living.

Palihouse iron gate, Los Angeles

About the Journal

California Romantica began as an Instagram account and a simple obsession: the whitewashed walls, red clay rooftops, arched doorways, and tiled fountains of California's Spanish Colonial Revival homes. The ones you pass on a Pasadena street and feel, briefly, that time has slowed down.

This journal grew from that obsession. It is a place to explore California's most romantic built landscape in depth — to tell the stories of the architects who created it, to document the details that make it beautiful, to write about the gardens and the interiors and the light that make these places feel unlike anywhere else on earth.

Every story published here is written with the same intention: to slow you down. To make you look more carefully. To give you language for what you have always felt but never quite been able to say about a certain kind of California beauty.

What We Believe

01

Slowness is a virtue

The best California homes were built to be lived in slowly — to be walked through, sat in, looked at. We write the same way.

02

Beauty is not trivial

A tiled arch, a bougainvillea-covered wall, a Saltillo floor glowing at dusk — these things matter. We take them seriously.

03

History deserves to be told

The architects and artisans who built California's most beautiful places are too often forgotten. We tell their stories.

04

California is a feeling

Not just a place — a quality of light, a warmth of stone, a particular way the afternoon falls across a whitewashed wall. That is what we are chasing.
